If you haven't played Trenched, well I'm sorry - you're never going to. Double Fine was forced to change the name due to some copyright dispute in Europe over a board game I've never heard of - but don't despair.... You can now play the same game called "Iron Brigade" instead!
I've been a big fan of the Deus Ex series since the beginning. I like the cyberpunk setting and the gameplay tends to be pretty good. There's always a wide variety of ways to approach any given problem, which keeps things varied and interesting. I've been really psyched about DE:HR since it launched, but I finally made time for it in the run-up to Gaming Season 2011. Although the game has plenty of tactical options, I find myself drawn to the stealthy/pacifist options. There's a certain challenge in getting through a tricky situation without being detected that I find enjoyable.
I'm a sucker for cheap games. Steam sales do bad things to my wallet. I generally buy at least 10-20 games on sale from Steam or other sources every year. I'm just a sucker for the big 75% OFF! banners and the chance to get a whole game's worth of entertainment for $5 or less. Many are from smaller publishers or indie studios.
The Call of Duty "Elite" service is perhaps one of the most ironically named creations I have encountered in recent memory. In the logo version of the name the spelling looks more like "EL:T3" - clearly their marketing team's effort to impress the gaming community with the girth of their knowledge of leetspeek. However, the service is currently struggling to a) Register new users b) Serve up any content whatsoever. Given that many customers may have opted to upgrade to the premium "pay for" service at the time of preorder, to say that I am unimpressed with the "Elite-ness" of Elite is quite an overstatement.
So expectations were high for our first night of Modern Warfare 3, and in the end I was not disappointed. Sure there were some disappointing things about the evening, but overall it gave me what I craved.
Halo 3 introduced me to the concept of the "meta game". A game within a game. A game that you played, by playing another game. The philosophical ramifications are vast - but it is also fun and a great diversion, especially in a competitive online game where you might not be doing so hot.
October was a trying month. When I wasn't frothing at the mouth soaking up campy MW3 hype like this , I was desperately trying to find some game options that could fill the void. It is at this point I ask friends, sometimes with an empty, seemingly disinterested tone... "got any game suggestions"?
I heard about it and decided to check it out pretty soon after it launched. I was in a phase where I was looking for something to occupy my PC time, and I'd burned through several "Free To Play" MMOs on Steam prior to hearing about it. It seemed to be exactly what I was looking for - something fairly casual, but deep, with a quirky sense of imagination and humor. I've spent at least an hour a day with it (sometimes much more than that) since it launched, and I think I've logged enough time to give an in-depth critique of its successes and failures.
So EBongo had this great idea that we should start a blog. He was going on and on about all the awesome content and how we were going to be bajillionares or whatever. So here it is!
