The Most Controversial Clash Royale Exploit

It seems everywhere I go to read Clash Royale strategies recently, everyone is talking about the same exploit. It seems to be on everyone’s mind, but the debate about whether it is an exploit and whether it is beneficial has earned it the title “Most Controversial Clash Royale Exploit” in the few short weeks that Clash Royale has been available. It’s pretty likely you’ve heard about it, or have wondered about it – so read on and we’ll break down all of the details.

Clash Royale Exploit Goblin Stadium

So What is this Clash Royale Exploit?

Clash Royale has an interesting loot mechanic that limits the cards available based on what Arena you are competing in. The way the mechanic operates isn’t perfectly obvious as we explain in our Clash Royale Beginner’s Guide there is no benefit to hording rare chests because the loot is locked to the Arena level you earned the chest. Crafty Kings will realize then that you can exploit the limited card pool of the lower level Arenas to maximize your chances for specific cards. The lower you go, the fewer possible cards you can get with each chest, and therefore the better your chances are at getting a specific card you are collecting… sort of…

Will This Clash Royale Exploit Break the Game?

Probably not. Plenty of math savvy folks will recognize that time is the scarcest resource you are dealing with in card collection, and as a result the grind it will take to get any card to max level far outweighs the percentage benefit of slumming it in the Goblin Stadium.

But what about the drop rate difference EBongo? Did you ever think of that? Yes… I did. There are an even number of each kind of card up through Arena 5, and then the Epics and Legendaries upset the balance slightly. For the lower ranges the odds of a given card rarity being the card you want are:

  • 16.7% for Goblin Stadium (Arena 1)
  • 12.5% for Bone Pit (Arena 2)
  • 10% for Barbarian Bowl (Arena 3)
  • 8.3% for P.E.K.K.A’s Playhouse (Arena 4)

However, the increased card drop rate as you increase Arenas almost wholly offsets this difference in chances such that in the long run, your odds of getting a card you want are almost the same or better in higher Arenas. Let’s look at an example…

Clash Royale Exploit Barbarian Bowl

Mathing for Science

Consider a cycle of 240 chests, which I have on good authority is a pretty good approximation of the current drop rate. Out of 240 chests:

  • 180 are Silver
  • 54 are Gold
  • 3 are Giant
  • 3 are Magical

Given those drop rates, we can cross reference the chest loot tables and determine the following:

  • Each 240 chest cycle, if executed perfectly without a second of wait time, takes 43.5 days to complete
  • Each cycle in Goblin Stadium (Arena 1) generates ~1311 Common Cards and ~10,665 Gold
  • Each cycle in Bone Pit (Arena 2) generates ~1812 Common Cards and ~14,443 Gold
  • Each cycle in P.E.K.K.A’s Playhouse (Arena 4) generates ~2622 Common Cards and ~21,150 Gold

Now consider that it takes a staggering quantity of Cards and Gold to max a given troop – 8,587 Cards and 85,625 Gold for a Common Troop.

Clash Royale Exploit PEKKAS Playhouse

The Final Sticker Shock

Using this “Clash Royale Exploit”, in Goblin Stadium it would take you:

  • 0.9 years to save enough Gold to upgrade one troop to max. You could save around twice that fast at 0.48 years in P.E.K.K.A’s Playhouse.
  • 4.68 years to save enough of the correct Cards to upgrade one troop to max. Near identical for Commons/Rares in P.E.K.K.A’s Playhouse due to card quantities (better for Epics).

This analysis discounts Free and Crown Chests, and buying cards, which would all seem to further favor the higher Arenas case (more Cards and Gold). It also doesn’t account for the increased fun and utility of more card variety. In any case, the end result seems pretty clear: picking on the little guys doesn’t pay. Since all of these odds and math may change over time, feel free to check my maths. If you’ve got a different opinion, leave a comment down below!

i am not disagreeing with the points you are making however it seems you are not really dismantling the myth. first of all you are right to assume that since you are getting 6 epics through magical chests at pekka’s playhouse instead of the 3 at goblin stadium that the chance of getting a specific epic doesn’t change despite there being double the variety of epics at pekka’s playhouse. BUT most epics i get are from crown chests and i think some also from gold chests (not sure tho) and unless the chance for epics from these chests is higher at pekka’s playhouse then the myth is actually true..i think atleast. nevertheless i agree that it is easier to max your collection at an higher arena.

Edit: just realised your apparently talking about the myth of maxing all cards at arena 1 before moving on..well i thought it was about the myth dropping to arena 1 to get a specific card which probably is the prince or baby dragon..i guess ill take back what i said..good article :D

Thanks for the feedback! I would be really interested to include Free and Crown chests in the modeling, but I’ve yet to find anywhere that has data on how those change at different Arena levels (although anecdotally I believe the Card quantities and Gold do change).

Someone on Reddit expressed interested in farming Epics in the Shop of Arena 1, which does hypothetically increase your chances provided you already have the necessary Gold (or you are willing to Gem). That is viable, but I just question the value compared to the Gold and Card output of higher Arenas. Prince and Baby Dragon are good, but there are many many competitive decks without them.

From what I’ve read about the chest quality for Free and Crown are that they are like Silver and Gold chests respectively.

        • EBongo

I’ve been doing some testing myself, and that seems to be exactly right. I’m working on some calculations that factor that in.

If by breaking the game we mean annoying newbies and make them leave …. Yeah sooner or later it will break the game lol
